ACR Passenger Rail Service Subsidy Extended
to March 31, 2015

April 14, 2014
This morning in Sault Ste. Marie, Transport Canada Minister announced that they would be extending the subsidy for the Passenger Rail Service for one more year.
We are pleased that Minister Raitt has made this favorable decision for the extension. Over the last several months, NOTO has worked with the tourist operators along this line to write letters and gather economic impact data to impress upon Federal Government the damage that an immediate cancellation of the subsidy would create.
We also provided support for our tourist operators by working with Carol Caputo from Algoma Kinniwabi Travel Association who was our tourism representative that sits on the locally formed ACR Passenger Service Working Group. This group is made up of tourist operators, municipalities, private cottage owners, trappers, and first nations who depend on the existence of this passenger service.
Although our operators that rely heavily and some solely on this service to transport their guests, supplies and themselves to their properties along the ACR line are breathing a sigh of relief for the time being, their work has only just begun.
Over the next twleve months we will continue to lend support for the tourist operators where we can to see that a viable solution is found.
