As NOTO continues regular discussions with MNR staff to help reduce red tape, we are looking for feedback from operators who regularly apply for travel permits. A travel permit is what allows an operators to use roads that have been closed to the public by MNR for:
- Public safety during active forestry operations, where heavy equipment, logging trucks, and road construction activities create hazards.
- Protection of road infrastructure when roads are vulnerable to damage, such as during spring thaw or periods of excessive rainfall.
- Wildfire management, including restricting access to areas affected by active fires or firefighting operations.
- Environmental protection, such as preventing damage to sensitive habitats, waterways, or wildlife areas.
- Resource management activities, including forest renewal, silviculture work, or other land management projects.
- Emergency situations, such as flooding, washouts, or other events that make roads unsafe for travel.
For tourism operators, travel permits may be available to allow access through restricted areas when it is safe and appropriate to do so, helping businesses continue their operations while maintaining safety and resource management objectives.
