Region Specific Updates for Operators near Kashabowie, Timmins, Ogoki, Red Lake

Waasigan Transmission Line Project by Hydro One

For operators in the Kashabowie Area

The Waasigan Transmission Line will be a new double-circuit 230 kilovolt transmission line between Lakehead Transformer Station (TS) in the Municipality of Shuniah and Mackenzie TS in the Town of Atikokan, and a new single-circuit 230 kilovolt transmission line between Mackenzie TS and Dryden TS in the City of Dryden.

Construction is anticipated to begin this year with the first phase from Shuniah to Atikokan in-service at the end of 2025 and the second phase from Atikokan to Dryden in-service by the end of 2027.

The Ministry of Environment, Conversvation and Parks has approved the Environmental Assessment for this project, however, there are concerns with regards to the close proximity of this new transmission line on the Northern shoreline of Shebandowan Lake, specifically near Three Mile Bay. A condition put forward by the MECP is that Hydro One would need to apply for a variance (an exemption) to the Shebandowan Lake Management Plan from the Ministry of Natural Resources in order to build within 30m to 40m of the shoreline.

If you are impacted by this development, please contact NOTO staff. We are currently working on a letter to encourage all parties to find an alternate route for this new transmission line that will not impact resource-based tourism operators in the Kashabowie region.
