Provincial Bait Policy Review

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) is seeking the public’s input on three options of the Bait Policy Review. The options are:
–          Commercial sale and transportation of bait
–          Allocation and
–          Reporting
The purpose of the provincial bait policy review is to determine how the ecological risks associated with the movement and use of bait (i.e. baitfish and leeches) can be minimized to help maintain healthy fisheries and aquatic ecosystems, while reducing the complexity of current management regimes and providing business certainty to the bait industry.
To provide feedback on the range of policy options, a Policy Proposal Notice related to the above topic of the policy review was posted on the Environmental Registry (EBR Registry Numbers: 012-4222) on June 8, 2015. To allow individuals to easily provide comment on this posting in a structured way, MNRF has included a survey associated with the topic areas.  Completing this survey is considered formal feedback to the postings and will be considered during the development of final policy.

Please be reminded that NOTO sits on the Bait Review Advisory Group (BRAG) on your behalf. Feel free to share your input with us. We urge you to take the time to read through the EBR and give your feedback. The postings will be available for comment until July 22nd 2015. If you have any questions regarding these postings or the provincial bait policy review please contact Fisheries Section at bait@ontario.ca.
