Proposed Changes to Mining Act

Tourism, mining, and forestry are vital industries that sustain the economies of our Northern communities, and it is imperative that we foster a cooperative approach to land use.

Upon reviewing the proposal, and with comments received from members, we are putting together a submission to highlight the following:

  • Exploration companies should be required to obtain trail permits from MNR, similar to other northern industries, before any exploration activities are approved to ensure all industries on the landscape adhere to the same set of standards.
  • Unlike the Forest Management Planning process, mining exploration companies are able to carry out quite extensive projects with minimal consultations. We encourage Government to implement comprehensive mandatory consultations with all users and stakeholders in the area of exploration prior to carrying out activities.
  • NOTO is pleased to see the requirements for airborne and ground geophysical surveys. This will not only assist in mining exploration, but will also provide the Ministries with data on impacts of other resource users in the area. This will also help with confirming compliance with permits for both Ministries.
