ONTARIO STEPS UP ITS EFFORTS TO PREVENT ASIAN CARP INVASION
If Asian carp enter the Great Lakes, they could potentially eat the food supply that our native fish depend on and crowd them out of their habitat. This kind of invasion can have severe economic, social and environmental threats to Ontario and neighbouring Great Lake states.
Ontario and the US is placing very strong emphasis on coordination between local, provincial, federal and bi-national organizations to combat the threat of invasive species like Asian Carp, Zebra Mussels and Round Gobies.
Ontario has now joined the Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee in a further step to prevent the introduction of Asian Carp into the Great Lakes. Ontario also recently released the Ontario Invasive Species Strategic Plan 2012 which provides the roadmap for the fight against invasive species.
This year the US also announced the 2012 Asian Carp Control Strategy framework that includes a series of new measures to protect the Great Lakes from Asian Carp. This strategy is managed by the Asian Carp Coordinating Committee.
