MPP Bill Mauro Introduces Bill in Ontario Legislature to Reinstate Spring Bear Hunt
On Tuesday, October 8th, Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Bill Mauro put forward a Private Members’ Bill in the Ontario Legislative Assembly calling for an amendment to the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997 to provide an open season for black bears across Ontario from April 15 to June 15 of every year.
At this time, we understand that the introduction of this Bill on Tuesday constitutes the first reading and that the second reading could take place as early as December 8th, 2013. NOTO has contacted MPP Mauro’s office to learn more about his initiative and to determine what action NOTO should take if any. We will keep you informed as we learn more.
Over the years, NOTO has continued to seek champions within Government who would be willing to discuss the reinstatement of the hunt and have found very few who would take this issue forward with us.  While we hope that opening these discussions again in the legislature will bring back the hunt and help to strengthen the tourism industry, we are very guarded at this point until we learn more.
We will keep you posted as we look into this matter.  In the meantime, we would like to hear your thoughts on the possibility of bringing back the spring bear hunt.
