Wawa CLUAH posted to Environmental Registry
For several years there has been a land use planning exercise underway in the Wawa district known as the Crown Land Use Atlas Harmonization project (CLUAH). This is the first land use planning exercise of its kind in many years and it attempts to update and harmonize the old District Land Use Guidelines in the Wawa district. NOTO has been an active participant in the process, serving on the steering committee and the local working group. NOTO has long advocated for land use planning in order to create greater certainty for our industry and to reduce the threat to remote tourism values during forest management planning.
One of the important things we have attempted to do in this exercise is to create larger areas that will be planned for either remote tourism and recreation or road based tourism and recreation, in addition to general use areas. We believe a more zonal approach will improve opportunities for both road based and remote users. However, the initiative has been controversial in local communities and has been covered (and misrepresented) in the media many times. Several options have been created and will be presented during the public consultation process. All but one aims to create both remote and road based recreation zones. The option proposed by local road based recreation interests proposes only road based recreation zones and general use areas.
This is an important initiative for our entire industry, but especially for remote operators, since it could form the basis for other land use planning initiatives in the future. You now have several opportunities to become actively involved. You can comment on the Environmental Registry posting at:

There are also public open houses scheduled, starting next week.

We urge you to become involved in this initiative by attending the open houses and by posting your comments and ideas on the Environmental Registry. Please share this information and invitation to comment with others who may be interested, including your guests – it is important for government to know that quality recreational opportunities are important to many people, not just residents of local communities.
NOTO representative will be attending all of the open houses and we hope to see many of you there.
