The MNR is currently carrying out the spring fish stocking. Each year approximately 8.5 million fish are stocked into over 1200 lakes and rivers, including the Great Lakes. Fish stocking creates more angling opportunities, rehabilitates degraded fish populations and helps restore biodiversity. Fish are also good indicators of environmental change and fish populations provide early warning signals about potential problems in the environment.
Across the province millions of fish from provincial fish culture stations are being loaded onto trucks, boats and airplanes for stocking of public waters. The province operates 9 fish culture stations which produce the stock.
The recreational fishery is valued at more than $2.4 billion per year and the province invest approximately $5.5 million per year in fish culture and stocking activities.
