Sioux Lookout Hudson Tourism Association Re-established!

A message from SLHTA President, Nicole Archer

We are pleased to announce that we have re-established the Sioux Lookout Hudson Tourism Association (SLHTA) which has not been active in many years. We have a new executive at our annual general meeting which was held on Friday April 5, 2024.

  • Nicole Archer, President (Moosehorn Lodge)
  • Troy Mansfield, Vice President (Winoga Lodge)
  • Larry Bower, Treasurer (Frog Rapids Camp)
  • Alastair Webster, Secretary (Rae & Al’s Northumbrian Lodge)

Our goal is to encourage bringing more tourism to our beautiful location and promoting our area as a destination. The association by-laws were changed to include any member in tourism. We are already a diverse group with tourist operators, hotels, outpost camps, houseboat operators and a few local businesses who have a vested interest in local tourism. There was a survey that was sent out back in December and from a majority of those that completed the survey the most popular project initiative was the Tagged Fishing contest for the MAPB Lakes as well as ice fishing to help promote year-round fishing.

This is our first project underway and hoping to have this up and running with marketing material and tickets for sale at all the camps by fall of this year. We will be working with local businesses in ensuring that all revenue streams of tourism can benefit from the projects.

Earlier in May, we also collaborated with the municipal recreation department in regards to changes to the boat launch program for the local launches. In our area there are 9 public launches which creates a challenge for municipal funds being allocated to these launches. For many years there has been a fee for using the launches but this year there was a request for the fees to be increased by 300% ($50 for an annual pass last year and $150 proposed for this year). Also, they wanted to move to an online platform which would be cumbersome for older people as well as non-residents. Clearly the locals as well as the tourist outfitters were not happy with this proposal. In the end it was decided by the municipality that they would not be using the electronic system and that the feels were only raised by a much smaller amount.

This collaboration immediately created more interest in memberships to the association and we look forward to really gearing up in the fall.

Nicole Archer, President
